We’ve had a rough week around these parts – if you keep up with me on facebook or twitter, you already know what’s been happening. A bigger post on that will come soon, when I have the time and capacity to write it – but in the meantime, I couldn’t help but share a pretty funny moment from my dear Avery this morning.

She’s now four and a half and one thing I love about her is her logic – the way she thinks about things and presents them often seems far beyond her years, and sometimes reminds me of how I approach things. Except for when she does that fake cry thing, that drives me nuts. Anyhow…

This morning Avery and I were in the bathroom getting ready for our day. Without prompting and completely out of the blue, she said in a thoughtful voice, ”Mom, I think you should buy me and Alex our own iPads. Then we can have just kid apps on our own iPads, and you can have just work apps on your iPad.”

I chuckled, raised an eyebrow and said something about how iPads cost a lot of money and I’m not sure we’ll be able to do that. Then her brother walked in and she immediately said, in a very serious voice, “Alex, I have good news and bad news.”

Wide eyed he asked her to explain. She continued, “The bad news is that Mom is going to take all our kid apps off the iPad.”

He looked at me confused, “is that true?”

I gave him a kind smile to set him at ease while his sister forged on. “The good news is that Mom is buying us each our own iPads so we can have our very own apps on our very own iPads.”

This must have been when I busted out laughing – it’s one thing to have the idea, it’s another to try to convince your brother that it’s happening, and a third thing to present it in such a strategic way! I’ve never heard her take this bad news/good news approach. I’m a bit baffled, but overall quite impressed with my girl.

No matter how tough our week has been, we need humor. I’m grateful for children who can still feel the sunlight instead of the weight of the world on their shoulders. I’ve been chuckling about this story all day, happy to share it now with you.

Very funny! My oldest is also very logical…and can use that logic to get people to do almost anything for him. :)
