My favorite smart phone apps

Posted by Missy in Uncategorized

Last week I featured my top 5 smart phone apps for productivity (check out my post over on MinnPost if you missed it). I use plenty of apps for entertainment as well and am featuring them for you today. All of these work on my Android system, (you’ll have to check to see if they are available for the iPhone or Blackberry).

Words with Friends – Like Scrabble, but not officially so. You play against friends who have also downloaded the same app as you have time. I love this one, it really helps me stretch my brain. You can find me as marketingmama* (the asterisk is part of my username). Also, follow @wordswfriends on twitter to learn cool words of the day.

Flixter – This app lets you quickly find which theatres are near you, which movies are playing and when. My favorite feature is the ability to watch trailers right from the app. Super easy.

RedBox – Want to know if it’s worth your time to stop at RedBox for a movie? Pull up the app to see what movies are in the box. Make a RedBox your home box and you can verify inventory and even reserve a movie to make sure the one you want is available. Also, if you have trouble remembering to bring back your RedBox movies in 24 hours, you might want to download RedMinder for a simple reminder in 22 hours.

Shazam – This app listens to pre-recorded music from the radio or a DJ set and identify the song and the artist for you. It keeps a log of songs you’ve identified and you even have the option of sharing the song with others via social sharing (facebook, twitter, etc.).

Wells Fargo – Just like online banking, but super fast. Check your account balances, see what’s cleared and even transfer funds.

Kids Doodle - A fun drawing app for kids (or kids at heart). Change background color, pen color and even save or share your images. Alex made this design on the right and saved it!

Chipotle Nutrition Calculator – It’s unofficial and takes a moment to figure out how it works, but this handy little app will tell you how many calories are in your fave Chipotle meal. Pick and choose between types of meat and burrito/tacos or bowl… plus if you get regular, 1/2 or twice the amount of toppings.

Classic Tetris – Like the original with the Russian (I think) music, but.. ya know.. it’s a touch screen version. CopyCat Lite – Similar to the old SIMON light and sound memory game. My 5 year old loves this.

Mole! Mole! Mole! - Remember poke-a-mole at Chuck E. Cheese? Like that. Perfect for the pre-school crowd. And maybe drunk adults.

Over on my productivity apps post I also wrote about Tweetdeck for Twitter, Evernote for note-taking, LinkedIn for business, CamCard for scanning business cards, and Google Maps. Check it out for descriptions of each.

What are some of your favorite apps?

p.s. I don’t have my own app, but I do have a facebook page. Let’s connect there, too!

Good choice of apps. I had an Evo and had a bunch of cool apps, but I got rid of the phone since I didn't care for it too much – other than the apps. I wish I would have known about the Simon one, I think Graycen would have loved it.
