We’ve been members of the Minnesota Zoo for a few years, it’s a great place to go with little ones – especially when those little ones are obsessed with animals, like mine. We were excited to hear about the new 3M Penguins of the African Coast Exhibit that opened last month. In fact, we went opening weekend to be among the first to see the penguins.

Here’s a picture of the exhibit – There is one giant window where you can see the penguins on land or swimming in the water. On the left you’ll see large rocks where children can climb up to get face to face with the penguins. It was the most popular place of the exhibit and my kiddos loved climbing on there.

The kids could get pretty close to the swimming penguins, too, like this little girl I captured. And look at the face of the little girl behind her – penguins are fun to watch!

I was really happy to see a volunteer sitting near the exhibit, teaching about the penguins. My kids love learning about the animals and will quote facts and figures about them months later! Here the Zoo volunteer was showing them a penguin skull and explaining how the beak is part of the skull. She also had penguin feathers and other specimens to share.

In addition to the penguin exhibit, I was happy to see many other construction projects finished up at the Zoo – they unveiled this new “soft play” indoor area called the Beehive. It was a nice, quiet place for us to take a time out and potty break. Hint: there’s a small, private family bathroom in this area that even has a pre-schooler sized toilet!  If you haven’t been there in awhile, you’ll also notice the new main entrance and outdoor signs. It’s obvious they’ve been working hard to make the Zoo a great experience for families.

And the PR and marketing folks have been busy, too – I just love the campaign they developed around the new penguin exhibit! Here’s one of the ads, focused on getting kids involved in waddling… very fun! They also sent me a press kit with pictures and 4 free admission passes to the zoo. Of course I had already been there and was going to write about it anyways… but I’ve used a few of their pics and I’m going to give those 4 passes away to one of you.

Simply leave a comment here letting me know if you’d like to go check out the penguin exhibit and I’ll draw a person at random on Wednesday evening. I’ll send you a note if you are the winner.

Disclosure: I was not compensated in any way for this post, other than the press kit which had a few nominal gift items and the four passes. I am a big supporter of the MN Zoo and give them a lot of $ each year, especially the gift shop, to feed my kids stuffed animal addiction. And the latte counter where they serve Caribou coffee… to serve MY addiction.

  2. We would love to go see the penguins. With 3 kids and 2 adults, it gets expensive and I would love to go before we move next spring.

  3. Ruby Leigh says:

Ok, so when I first saw those signs with the kids waddling… I was like I bet Marketing Mama (Missy) is going to say something about this! …. and boom! I’m right. Just gloating in how well I know my bloggers I guess. hah.

  4. Collin Vold says:

That is a really cute marketing campaign. Would love to check out the Penguin exhibit.

  5. Brian Kennett says:

This summer has been all about zoo time for my kiddos / wife. The splash pad is surprisingly empty on the really hot days…and the kids love it!

  6. Jessica says:

I’ve been hearing about the new penguin exhibit all summer, and would love to go check it out!

  7. Susan says:

I love the penguin commercials too! They’re super cute, and it would be fun to see the penguins in person.

  8. Bria Skalsky says:

I would love to take my little sister to the zoo for her birthday! She has been begging me to go with her, but money just has not allowed.

    • Wendy Amundson says:

Bria, if you don’t win the tickets, consider using the Museum Adventure Pass at most, if not all, metro area libraries. You can check out a pass with your library card for 2 free tickets to many area museums and attractions, including the MN Zoo. The zoo passes are very popular, so they’re not always immediately available, but if you keep checking your library, you’ll eventually land one (must be used within 7 days of check-out, I believe).

  9. Kristin Sawatzke says:

That’s looks so fun! Would love to bring the kids they would love it:)

  10. Tina says:

I found your blog while looking at the MN Zoo Facebook page. I’m looking forward to reading more from you. I didn’t know about the play area you mentioned here, we’ll have to check that out next time we are at the zoo. Plus, the family restroom is a huge thing since I have a 2 year old who is potty training! Thanks for sharing that bit of info!

Don’t include me in on the contest, I have a membership to the zoo, so I don’t need it.

I love what they’ve been doing at the MN Zoo to make the exhibits more engaging for both the animals and the human visitors. A few years back I had the opportunity to interview many on the zoo staff, including the exec director and it was fascinating to learn the small and big design elements in the exhibits that help the animals remain active and curious about their surroundings. I hope to see the new Penguin Exhibit soon, but will take myself out of the free drawing so more families with kids have a chance.

  14. Megan says:

My husband and I are members of the zoo and I have to say I was a bit disappointed with the penguin exhibit. I was expecting a larger area much like the newish Grizzly coast area. They certainly were cute though and they make a great addition to the animal line up at the zoo. Now if only they could get the giraffes back!

    • Missy says:

Hey Megan, I’ve heard others say the same thing about being bummed it was smaller than they expected… I was expecting the penguins to be bigger! They are pretty small! So it makes sense the space isn’t quite as big then I suppose… I totally agree about the giraffes – they were awesome!

  15. kristin says:

My family would love a trip to the zoo! My 3 year old gets excited anytime she sees the penguin ads!

I would love to take PapaBear to see the penguins since he didn’t get to go when I took the kids a couple weeks back when it was so hot and was thrilled to see that the penguins were INDOORS so we could enjoy them without sweating to death in the terrible humidity.
